Admitted as a solicitor in England and South Africa, Henry mediated commercial and family issues, but has retired from practice and focuses on writing, some training and consultancy.

Author of the Law Society's Report on civil-commercial ADR (1991), co-author with Arthur Marriott QC of ADR Principles & Practice (1993, 1999 and 2011), and co-author of Managing Difficult Divorce Relationships (2006), he was a member of CEDR's initial training faculty. He has acted as a consultant to the Law Society and jointly to the NHS Litigation Authority and AvMA (Action against Medical Accidents). Until his retirement, he was a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; the CPR International Panel of Distinguished Neutrals, New York; and the Law Society's commercial mediation panel.

Henry has trained mediators in the UK, Denmark, South Africa, Hong Kong and Iceland. He co-founded and is a Vice-President of the Family Mediators Association and established the mediation programme of the family lawyers' organisation Resolution and was its first Director of Mediation. He holds a Certificate in the Fundamentals of Psychotherapy and Counselling.
